In celebration of Yorkshire Day 2020 East Leeds FM radio / Chapel FM Arts Centre will be broadcasting live from Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 1 August from 12pm. The programme will include a special concert by Leeds City Organist, Darius Battiwalla, on the Town Hall’s magnificent organ which was first played during the opening ceremony of the Town Hall attended by Queen Victoria in 1858.

This will be the first live performance at the Town Hall since the Coronavirus Lockdown (although with no live audience). Over the past 18 weeks the Leeds International Concert Season team, which delivers over 200 concerts a year at venues across the city and Morley Town Hall, has been working in line with government guidance to find ways in which to bring back live music safely to audiences, and is delighted to be working in partnership with Chapel FM on the journey to bringing live music back to Leeds.

Darius’s Yorkshire Day programme features music which has been written by composers who all, bar one, have a direct link to Yorkshire. The broadcast will include an interview with composer Philip Wilby. Darius, in conversation with Chapel FM’s Director of Words Peter Spafford, will introduce the pieces as he would normally do in his much-loved Monday lunchtime organ concerts at Leeds Town Hall.

We’re eager to have stories and comments from members of the public who love the Town Hall to include in the Yorkshire Day broadcast. So if you’d like to be interviewed for the radio broadcasts or submit a memory or reflection about what the Town Hall and performances there have meant to you, please email: or text 07305448989 by 6pm on Friday 24 July and we’ll get in touch about recording a short interview or including any email comments.

Support Leeds Town Hall

The loss of ticket sales for cancelled events due to the pandemic is of huge concern, particularly as we look to the future and the redevelopment plans for Leeds Town Hall. With this in mind, we ask if you would consider making a donation to help sustain Leeds Town Hall – perhaps the most iconic and best loved building in the city, and one of such historic value to the people of Leeds and beyond.
