Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet overture is a twenty-minute whistle-stop tour through the most famous love story ever written. Out of the tempestuous fighting passages emerges the utterly wondrous love theme.
British composer Edward Gregson’s new oboe concerto A Vision in a Dream, is based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem of the same name, written in 1797. The poem came to Coleridge in an opium-induced dream, and describes the paradise gardens of Xanadu. Read more about the work here.
Across the Channel, Berlioz wrote his Symphonie fantastique inspired by a tragically unrequited
infatuation with the beautiful actress Harriet Smithson. The symphony comes with a narrative from Berlioz’s also opium-induced dreams; of a festive ball, hazy countryside frolicking – and of the resentful composer’s own execution for Harriet’s murder.
