The St John Passion, first performed on Good Friday 1724 and here in the week leading to Easter, is a remarkably powerful work, particularly so in its dramatic crowd scenes.
Emotionally charged, perhaps the biggest joy of the St John Passion is that, for all the ferocity and sorrow of the Good Friday story, it’s a truly optimistic work, anticipating the resurrection with music suffused with light and hope.
Selected as one of the world’s greatest ‘living’ orchestras, the English Chamber Orchestra performs with the magnificent Leeds Festival Chorus.
