America! Bernstein Centenary: Under 13 Orchestra pays homage to one of America’s greatest composers through rambunctious repertoire dedicated to the United States. The concert begins in dusty Havana, Cuba, where Gershwin holidayed amongst the grand rainbow avenues and palm trees (Cuban Overture). We hotfoot over to Manhattan with three American sailors, granted leave for 24-hours from their ship: “New York, New York! It's a helluva town!” (Three Dance Episodes from On the Town).
Abe Lincoln’s iconic speeches – including his 1863 Gettysburg Address - take center stage as the orchestra perform their rendition of Copland’s Lincoln Memorial. The performance closes with Dvorak’s Symphony No.9, a hymn to the musical styles of Native and African Americans.
